Embedded at the foot of the castle hill, a golden jewel mirrors the waters of the Danube. The design of the new Water Tower is a dignified dialogue between the present and the past. Historical buildings have been cleaned of the deposits of the past and a new, contemporary layer has found its place among them. The ruins of the ancient tower and city walls are not restored to their original shape, nor are they transformed into a passive lifeless museum exhibit. Instead, the existing shape is emphasised by a golden marker and the walls become part of everyday life.
Integrating a functional programme within the city walls also frees up the adjacent public space – in the form of an amphitheatre with a water feature on the west side, and in the form of a small piazzetta in the east side, which makes the historical icehouse stand out.
